What is Shame On Hate?
HATE: Intense hostility and aversion towards something.
SHAME: A painful feeling of humiliation or distress caused by the consciousness of wrong or foolish behavior.
On August 12th 2017, Heather Heyer lost her life as a car plowed into a crowd of counter-demonstrators who were protesting a rally of neo-Nazis, Ku Klux Klan members and other white nationalists. She was a young woman who was deeply involved in taking a stand against injustice. She was truly passionate about making a difference.
When our team heard about this news, we were heartbroken for her. Her story specifically caught our attention, and then after that, we began hearing more and more stories of people being affected by hate around the world.
Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe had a pointed message for the right-wing groups that flocked to Charlottesville on that particular day: “Go home. … You are not wanted in this great commonwealth. Shame on you.” His words were filled with emotion, as he shamed the hate groups that took the life of an innocent Heather.
We agree with his words, and felt the strong emotions as well. As much as we wish the word/act of HATE did not exist, it does. And for those who act on it and empower it…Shame on them!
Human evolution is a process of change by which people originated. As early humans adapted to a changing world, they evolved certain characteristics that help define our species today. We have come a long way, and continue to progress beautifully. Shame on those who find a purpose in reversing our progress! Shame on all the hate!
We created this message for those who feel the same way we do. Those who want the Hate to stop and are tired of seeing unnecessary hateful acts happen around the world. Those who want to see change, in a direction that leads to more love.
Let’s embrace change, embrace cultures, embrace differences in each other. Let’s respect and admire what makes us individuals. Let’s realize what we do have in common, that we are all humans living on one planet, trying to live the best lives we can live. Let’s love.
Partial proceeds from this campaign will go towards helping the Heather Heyer Foundation in funding scholarships for those seeking to pursue an educational path towards social justice and unity.
